LOS ANGELES, CA - January 15, 2004 - Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced today that GB Airways' fleet of Airbus A320/A321 has been equipped with Teledyne's Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) solution.
GB Airways completed installation on their Airbus fleet after the required CAA STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) and EASA approval were obtained in late 2003. These regulatory achievements allow GB Airways to take advantage of the operational improvement provided by the Teledyne Controls Electronic Flight Bag system.
"Teledyne's solution offers a durable and simple system with room for future expansion," said GB Airways' Airbus Fleet Manager Captain Andrew Packer. "This proven system, used by many US carriers, supplies timely and accurate data that will be instrumental in improving our operation through areas, such as reduced maintenance costs, increased engine life, and maximum uplift." The EFB solution includes Teledyne's Onboard Performance Software (OPS), a flight deck tool that provides takeoff and landing performance data, along with weight and balance information under all combinations of current environmental airport, and aircraft system conditions. Running on a Hammerhead HH3 tablet computer, configured as a Class 2 device, the full system provides pilots with a light, portable, and easy-to-use tool.
"The selection of our EFB by GB Airways, who is a key European airline, is pivotal in our strategy, and provides Teledyne Controls with a competitive edge in European markets " said Todd Stout, RAF (Ret.) Teledyne Controls' Sales Manager for the Europe region. "GB Airways is a pro-active, progressive and cost-conscious European airline whom we are excited to work with. We look forward to collaborating on other paperless cockpit solutions in the future."
Teledyne Controls' Electronic Flight Bag is an open platform that integrates software applications, such as onboard performance, aeronautical charts, graphical weather, and an electronic documentation browser capable of displaying flight operations manuals, equipment lists, operating procedures, and many other airlines documents. The applications can run on a variety of compact ruggedized PC based computers that ensure secured storage, high visibility, and eliminate the traditional cumbersome flight bag. This innovative paperless cockpit solution replaces time-consuming paper manual methods, therefore improving data accuracy and flight crew productivity. It also provides a quantifiable return on investment for the airlines.
